Libraries are an unavoidable part of student life. While you can certainly study at home, that comes with its challenges. If you are moving or planning to study in Budapest you probably realised that they are not well advertised either. Fear not, for we are going to go through all the libraries of Budapest worth visiting and you can find out which one is best for you.
Time of past
The tradition of libraries in Hungary goes way back to 14. century, but these were private book collections held by members of higher society. It was about the 18th. century when the necessity for mass public libraries and with it education arose. Many have decided to share these family heirlooms with the nation, creating this way the first libraries in Budapest. Many of them still operate today, preserving the names of their founders.
The National Széchenyi Library
Let’s start with the national library of Hungary, located in the Castle District in Budapest. This beautiful amalgamation of books holds many treasures from the country's history. Their collections mostly are in Hungarian, however, you can find books from other main world languages as well. If you need some primary resources. Although not the fanciest of the bunch, if you are found to learn about the country and its people you couldn’t find a historically more relevant place than this.
University Libraries
It is only natural for students to be acquainted with the university libraries available in the city. Each of these hosts hundreds of books on their subjects of interest. The Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) has two major libraries, as well as other lovely study spaces tucked away throughout its numerous campus locations. Just like the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, as well as Semmelweis University (the country’s top medical school) both feature great libraries in Budapest. Or if you want something closer to your place then Dean’s College Library is there for you.
Beginning of a New Story
If you are a student preparing to study in Budapest, Dean’s college is for you. They are not just providing nice quality rooms to stay close to the major universities, but you can also build meaningful relationships with other students from all around the world. A final cherry on top is that Dean’s also has its library. They have a formidable collection from scientific literature to fiction with a nice cozy study place available for all of their students.
