The Alternative To Single Use Plastic Cutlery Is Here

More

Community food truck events are great opportunities to have fun, eat yummy food and connect with your neighbors and friends. But next time you head out to a food truck or a picnic or even travel via airplane, be environmentally friendly by bringing reusable utensils with you. A preponderance of people now carry their own water bottles, so we could easily carry our own cutlery too. It’s not as hard as it seems and it’s much better than throwing it in the trash.

Single use plastic forks, knives and spoons are not recyclable. Repeat!! Single use plastic cutlery does not get recycled even when you put it in the recycling bin. These bits of plastic are too small, too light weight and too contaminated, so they don’t ever get recycled. Maybe you think, “It’s just one fork,” but multiplied by millions upon millions, those plastic utensils are terrible for the environment. The World Economic Forum puts the number of individual plastic utensils wasted at 40 billion per year in the United States alone.

So if we want less plastic in our landfills and waterways, then everyone needs to stop using throwaway bits of plastic and carry our own resuables instead. I tried out my new set of Duebest Fair Trade reusable wooden cutlery at my neighborhood food truck event this weekend. Duebest, a new female owned company, aims to change the habit of wasting plastic that’s been designed for throwing away after a single use. The fork, knife, spoon, and chopstick sets are made with sustainably sourced teak wood and handcrafted by artisans in Bali. They’re compact and convenient.

“People get overwhelmed with living a sustainable lifestyle, but we want to make it easier for them by offering good quality products that are durable and better for the environment,” said co-owner BobbiJo McCauley. She believes people have the power to create an eco-friendly society by shifting consumer buying and creating a culture where everyone brings their own.

The cutlery set fits in a compact case so you can take it traveling, camping, hiking, picnics or anywhere you go. So go ahead and participate. Refuse plastic and choose reusable utensils instead. You can also join the non-profit organization Habits of Waste #CutOutCutlery campaign. And then imagine the impact we could make if everyone used a single cutlery set instead of thousands of throwaway plastics.
